About Us

Founded in September, 2019, Merida English Rotary Club is the first English-Language Rotary Club in the State of Yucatan, Mexico.

We are a diverse group of Rotarians from all over the world that have chosen to call the Yucatan our home.  We have members from Mexico, Australia, Canada and the United States. Our goal is to effect positive change here in the Yucatan with specific sustainable projects that will improve people's daily lives.

Some members of Merida English Rotary Club

Justin Berke

President 2022-2023

I was born in NYC and I spent over half my life in Brookline Massachusetts. I am now living in Merida. I moved here for work, and for the love of the city and Mexico in general. I was thrilled to learn of the Merida English Rotary Club soon after moving down. I was a member of the Rotary Club of Brookline and a past President, which was a tremendous honor. I have, over the years, become a firm believer in the power of Rotary.

Carol Martinez

Past President 2021-2022

I was born in Mexico City and I studied Classical Arts at UNAM. Since I was a child, I have enjoyed collecting clothes and shoes for people in need. I teach Language and Literature in Spanish in an international school and I am developing my own digital marketing business.  I feel over the moon when I read books, and I also enjoy some sports like billiards and running.

Neil Mandel

Past President 2020-2021

I am one of the founding members of our club.  I am lucky to have found Rotary and made some great lasting friendships.  I was born in New York City and am a huge Yankees fan.  I worked in the music business as a booking agent and promoter for about a decade.  Occasionally I do bust out some funny stories.  I love music and seeing concerts.  I pinch myself everyday that I live in paradise.  I live in Merida with my fiance that I met here.  Life is good

What Our Members Say

We are so proud to belong to Merida English Rotary Club

Dale Deubler

Member since 2021

“As a new member, MERC has provided a wonderful opportunity to meet new people during a time when opportunities to do this were very limited.  I enjoy MERC because it is a diverse group of people who are connected by the desire to provide meaningful service that is well conceived and organized.
I hope that as I participate more,
I will be able to use my skills in new ways.”

Tim Weaver

Member since 2021

For me, being a Rotarian means to serve and help others as needed understanding that some services in the short term may not be in person.  Also I like to belong to MERC because I develop friendships and bring happiness to others who are in need of services in their communities.  Besides when I participate in Rotary activities I feel as I did when I was in the Peace Corps the chance to give back and serve to those that are in need.

Eenid Elu Pilan

"The desire to become more effective with greater understanding of Rotary has me excited about the possibilities for growth as a member of MERC."
